Using 's suggestion, I did the following: Open up Automator Create a service called 'StartScreenSaver' (Spotlight 'automator' --> file --> new --> left side select 'utilities' --> drag 'start screen saver' to right hand side --> file --> save --> Name it something like StartScreenSaver) Open up Keyboard --> Shortcuts Under 'General' find 'StartScreenSaver' Assign it a shortcut Now, in my case I found command+L won't work because command + L is already a key combo for other things (like selecting the navigation bar in a web browser). I set it to command + shift + L, and it pauses for a quick second, and starts screen saver.
